Car price war intensifies amid record supply surge

According to the latest report from the National Statistics Office under the Ministry of Finance, an estimated 56,971 new vehicles – including both domestically produced and imported units – entered the Vietnamese market in September, marking a 5.4 per cent increase from August.

Domestic output reached 38,700 units in September, the second-highest monthly volume of the year, only behind June, marking a 2.4 per cent increase over August and a 19.7 per cent jump on-year.

In the first nine months of 2025, domestic manufacturers rolled out about 338,400 vehicles, surging 52.7 per cent on-year. This sharp growth highlights the expanded production capacity and aggressive push by carmakers.

Imports also continued to climb. September saw 18,271 completely built units arrive in Vietnam, worth $402 million, up 12.3 per cent in volume and 10.7 per cent in value from August. For the January–September period, imports totalled 156,092 units, valued at $3.42 billion, representing increases of 24.8 per cent and 33.3 per cent respectively compared to the same period last year.

However, the surge in supply contrasts with slower-than-expected consumption. The widening gap between production and sales has triggered a sweeping wave of promotions, as companies seek to clear inventory and stimulate demand for new models.

Price cuts have spread across the board, from mass-market to premium brands, covering Japanese, Korean, Chinese, and European models alike. Even bestsellers such as the Mazda CX-5, Mitsubishi Xpander, Ford Ranger, and Ford Everest are offering heavier incentives to maintain their market share.

“The current price war is unprecedented in scope. Even leading models are being offered with steep discounts, showing how urgent the pressure is to clear inventories,” said Tran Minh Hoang, an independent automotive analyst in Ho Chi Minh City.

As the market enters the final quarter when traditionally the peak shopping season ahead of Lunar New Year, analysts predict the discount race will persist. Strong supply and inventory pressure will keep competition intense, even as consumer demand gradually picks up.

For buyers, this creates an unprecedented opportunity to purchase vehicles at favourable prices. For carmakers, however, sustaining growth will require more than promotions. A longer-term strategy balancing supply and demand will be crucial to avoid overreliance on discounts.

At a national conference in Hanoi on October 9, held ahead of Vietnam Entrepreneurs’ Day, Hoa Phat Group chairman Tran Dinh Long urged the government to streamline decision-making, enhance transparency in public procurement, and prioritise Vietnamese products. He explained that clearer and more responsive policies are crucial to helping local industries remain competitive amid international headwinds.

Reflecting on nearly three decades since Vietnam joined ASEAN, Hoa Phat Group chairman Tran Dinh Long said, “The steel sector has evolved from a peripheral player to a pillar of regional manufacturing. From an output of just over one million tonnes in 1995, Vietnam has become Southeast Asia’s largest steel producer and now ranks 11th globally, reflecting the strength of our industry as well as Vietnam’s success in economic integration.”

He called for faster and more decisive implementation of the Politburo’s Resolution No.68-NQ/TW on private-sector development, stressing that bureaucracy remains a brake on enterprise growth. “Time is life in business. Every delay means missed opportunities,” he said. “Enterprises need ministries and local authorities to respond faster and act with conviction.”

Long also warned that rising global protectionism is compounding challenges for Vietnamese exporters, citing the EU’s recent move to double steel import duties from 25 to 50 per cent. “This will hit our exports directly,” he said. “The government needs flexible, timely countermeasures to safeguard domestic production while keeping trade fair and rules-based.”

For state-funded projects, Long urged ministries and agencies to prioritise Vietnamese materials that meet technical standards, arguing that national procurement policies should directly support local manufacturing. “The message is simple: if Vietnamese producers can deliver, they should have the first chance,” he said. Transparent bidding and fair competition, he added, must guide all major public schemes, from social and worker housing to national infrastructure.

“Domestic enterprises have invested heavily in capacity and technology,” Long concluded. “We’re ready to drive the country’s development, but that requires a level playing field and clear, consistent rules.”

Hoa Phat chief urges swift action to boost Vietnam’s steel industry

Hoa Phat’s recent performance underscores its leading position. In the third quarter of 2025, the group produced 2.8 million tonnes of crude steel, up 14 per cent on-quarter and 35 per cent on-year. Sales of hot-rolled coil (HRC), construction steel, high-quality steel and billets reached 2.5 million tonnes, an increase of 21 per cent compared to the same period last year.

Construction steel and rolled steel sales fell 17 per cent from the second quarter to just over one million tonnes, affected by the low building season and adverse weather. In contrast, HRC sales climbed 8 per cent from the previous quarter and 71 per cent on-year to over 1.2 million tonnes. September alone saw a record 477,000 tonnes sold.

Downstream HRC products also expanded steadily, with coated steel sheets reaching 120,000 tonnes and steel pipes 225,000 tonnes in the quarter.

Over the first nine months of 2025, Hoa Phat produced 7.9 million tonnes of crude steel, up 23 per cent on-year. Total steel sales reached 7.4 million tonnes, up 22 per cent, maintaining its 37 per cent market share in construction steel.

HRC output surged 51 per cent to 3.43 million tonnes, accounting for more than 56 per cent of Vietnam’s total, according to the Vietnam Steel Association. Coated steel output reached 320,000 tonnes (down 7 per cent), steel pipes 627,000 tonnes (up 25 per cent), and pre-stressed and wire-drawn steel 116,000 tonnes (up 25 per cent), with exports contributing 42 per cent.

The completion of blast furnaces No.1 and No.2 at the Hoa Phat Dung Quat 2 complex during the second and third quarters marked a strategic milestone. The fully operational project will significantly expand national HRC capacity, reinforcing Vietnam’s steel independence amid rising protectionism in global markets.

According to the General Department of Customs, exports of various types of leaves reached almost $1.2 million in August, up 13 per cent on-year. Cumulatively, the total value for the first eight months hit $9 million, representing a 27 per cent increase compared to the same period last year.

Vietnam earns nearly $9 million from leaf exports

Among them, cassava leaves led the group with nearly $3 million in export turnover, while bay leaves recorded the sharpest rise of 68.5 per cent. Banana, lemon, and sweet potato leaves also saw growth rates of 20-80 per cent, driven by rising global demand in cuisine and food processing.

According to Dang Phuc Nguyen, general secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, cassava leaves remain in high demand in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and several Muslim-majority countries. They are commonly used in curries and meat dishes due to their high protein and vitamin content. Some enterprises have even started exporting frozen mashed cassava leaves, a higher value-added product for the food processing industry.

In Vietnam, fresh cassava leaves sell for only $0.12–$0.20 per kilogram, yet their export value can be three to four times higher, reaching up to $2.80 per kilogram at retail markets abroad. Banana leaves, once used mainly for wrapping cakes and sticky rice, are now in demand as eco-friendly natural packaging materials. Meanwhile, sweet potato leaves have found a niche as a premium green vegetable in Japan and South Korea.

“Although leaf exports still account for a small portion of total fruit and vegetable turnover, they create a dual advantage by utilising agricultural byproducts while opening new, high-value niche markets,” Nguyen noted.

He added that Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable exports are rebounding strongly, with September exports estimated at nearly $1.3 billion, the highest level for the same period in history. At this pace, the sector could surpass $8 billion in 2025, far exceeding initial projections.

“Vietnamese leaves are not only versatile but also highly nutritious, rich in protein, minerals, and amino acids that support cell regeneration and strengthen immunity. Their use as natural packaging or culinary ingredients aligns with the global trend towards green and sustainable gastronomy,” Nguyen added.

This milestone not only introduces a new option for cargo transportation but also stands as a testament to the strong collaboration between Vietnamese and Singaporean enterprises in enhancing Vietnam’s global economic position within international value chains.

At the event, Nguyen Van Thang, Minister of Finance of Vietnam; Tan See Leng, Minister for Manpower, and Minister in charge of Energy, Science and Technology, Ministry of Trade and Industry of Singapore; Nguyen Khac Hieu, Vice Chairman of Phu Tho People’s Committee; Robert Yap, executive chairman of YCH Group; and Yap Kwong Weng, CEO of Vietnam SuperPort, jointly officiated the activation ceremony marking the commencement of operations of the OACT, a strategic component within Vietnam SuperPort’s multimodal logistics ecosystem.

Vietnam SuperPort launching off-airport cargo terminal, making a new milestone in Vietnam-Singapore cooperation

Just two days after announcing its development strategy and operational plan for the OACT at the FIATA World Congress 2025, Vietnam SuperPort has completed all necessary procedures and officially commenced OACT operations.

As one of the first OACT in Vietnam to fully integrate the functions of an “off-airport cargo terminal,” the OACT provides comprehensive services such as customs clearance, security screening, storage, ULD (Unit Load Device) build-up and breakdown, and transportation to the airport.

At the facility, cargo is processed under a stringent control system from the point of receipt to aircraft dispatch. Built and equipped with modern infrastructure that meets international air cargo security standards, the OACT is capable of receiving and handling goods from a wide range of companies and carriers, including those serving highly regulated markets such as the United States and Europe.

Strategically located along the northern economic corridor, the OACT connects more than 20 major industrial zones with key seaports and airports such as Noi Bai, Haiphong, and Quang Ninh, extending further to Yunnan and Kunming in China. This strategic positioning enables the OACT to serve as a vital transshipment hub linking Vietnam with the China-ASEAN region, establishing a direct bridge to the global air cargo network.

Yap Kwong Weng, CEO of Vietnam SuperPort, said, “The OACT is a groundbreaking initiative, serving as an ‘extended arm’ of the airport cargo terminal system. Its operation not only completes the multimodal logistics ecosystem of Vietnam SuperPort but also helps reduce cargo congestion at major airport terminals by up to 25 per cent, while expanding connectivity between domestic and global markets.”

Cargo handling operations inside the OACT

Positioned as a modern and smart cargo terminal, the OACT will apply advanced technologies such as AI and robotics. Specifically, Vietnam SuperPort has partnered with Google and Kyndryl to research and develop next-generation AI systems integrated into security scanners to detect prohibited and hazardous goods. AI is also being applied to automate cargo document verification, enhancing both safety and security in cargo handling.

In addition, with the support of Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), Vietnam SuperPort is developing Autonomous Guided Vehicles (AGVs), robotic loaders, and Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) to automate the entire warehouse operation process. These innovations are expected to increase operational productivity by up to 35 per cent while reducing error rates by 50 per cent.

The OACT is expected to undergo full digitalisation through an integrated logistics platform, enabling businesses to track, manage, and book services online via a single system, from customs declaration and security control to electronic payment. This marks a significant step toward establishing a fully digitalised air cargo supply chain, connecting Vietnam to the intelligent logistics networks of ASEAN and the global market.

Robert Yap, executive chairman of YCH Group, emphasised, “The official commencement of OACT operations reaffirms the strength and depth of the enduring partnership between Vietnam and Singapore. It reflects our shared strategic foresight, technological collaboration, and common vision to build a smart, sustainable, and connected regional supply chain. This forms a vital foundation for ASEAN to rise as a central player in global trade.”

Vietnam SuperPort is a multimodal logistics hub spanning 83 hectares in Phu Tho. It is a strategic joint venture between YCH Group, Singapore’s leading supply chain solutions provider with nearly 70 years of industry leadership, and T&T Group, one of Vietnam’s top 10 largest private multi-sectoral conglomerates.

Vietnam SuperPort aims to enhance Vietnam’s integration into the global supply chain, reduce logistics costs and strengthen the nation’s competitive edge in international trade. With a target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2040, Vietnam SuperPort is positioning itself as leading green and connected logistics hub in Southeast Asia.

Vietnam motorcycle market slows amid transition

On October 10, the Vietnam Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers (VAMM) reported that combined sales from its five members – Honda, Yamaha, Piaggio, Suzuki, and SYM – totalled just under 622,000 units between July and September 2025, down almost 9.4 per cent on-year. Despite Vietnam remaining one of Southeast Asia’s largest motorcycle markets, the decline signals a pause after two decades of strong growth.

With around 80 per cent of market share, Honda continues to dominate, but has not been spared from the downturn. In September alone, Honda sold almost 164,000 motorcycles, down 11.4 per cent on-year. From April to September, its total sales amounted to just over 1 million units, a slight fall compared with the previous year.

Dealers report sharper drops in recent months, particularly in mid-range scooters, as consumers adopt a wait-and-see approach. “People are wondering whether buying a petrol bike now could restrict them later, or if it’s better to wait until EVs become more affordable. This hesitation is putting the entire market on pause,” a major distributor explained.

In contrast, non-VAMM players such as VinFast, Yadea, and Dat Bike are gaining traction in the two-wheeler EV segment, forcing traditional giants like Honda and Yamaha to accelerate their electrification strategies.

The policy landscape is also reshaping expectations. Under a directive issued by the Prime Minister in July, Hanoi authorities must implement measures to restrict fossil-fuelled motorbikes from operating within Ring Road 1 by July 2026. The following stages will limit petrol-powered private cars inside Ring Roads 1 and 2 by 2028, extending to Ring Road 3 by 2030.

In response, VAMM has petitioned the government, warning that the 2026 restrictions in Hanoi could impose significant burdens on both consumers and industry. The association argues that low-income households and families reliant on multiple petrol bikes would face steep costs in switching vehicles. For businesses, the abrupt shift risks disrupting the entire motorcycle ecosystem – from production and distribution to after-sales services.

“Manufacturers will be forced to make substantial investments in restructuring production lines, upgrading technology, and developing new products, without sufficient time or financial support. This could result in heavy losses, production disruptions, and even bankruptcies,” VAMM noted. Nearly 2,000 dealerships and 200 component suppliers tied to internal combustion engines are expected to bear the brunt of declining revenues, with supply chain fractures a likely consequence.

VAMM also pointed out that companies have already invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in new technology and equipment to meet forthcoming regulations effective from 2027, such as EURO4 emission standards and fuel consumption limits. A sudden pivot to EVs could render these efforts wasteful and undermine the effectiveness of recently enacted environmental policies.

To avoid a disorderly transition, VAMM has proposed a more phased approach with a minimum preparation window of two to three years, giving households, businesses, and regulators time to adapt and mitigate risks.

The association further explained that infrastructure remains a critical barrier. Public charging stations are still insufficient, while concerns over fire safety – particularly in ageing apartment buildings with degraded electrical systems – are rising. “Addressing these issues is essential for consumer confidence, business investment, and the safe, effective rollout of electric mobility,” the association stressed.

In addition, VAMM urged policymakers to introduce supportive incentives, such as tax breaks and preferential credit, to encourage consumer adoption of electric two-wheelers.

The motorcycle market is shifting from sheer volume growth to structural transformation. While 2025 has been a challenging year, analysts predict stabilisation from the second half of 2026 as economic growth resumes, incomes rise, and the green consumption trend strengthens.

The interplay of electrification, technological renewal, and consumer appetite for sustainable mobility is expected to shape the next growth cycle. In the long term, Vietnam will remain a pivotal two-wheeler market in ASEAN, not only for domestic consumption but also for its export potential.
